Religious Cubans Denounce Persecution of Muslims, Jews and Yorubas by Dictatorship

 
MIAMI, FL – Outreach Aid to the Americas (OAA) yesterday held a webinar where Cuban religious leaders representing the Muslim, Jewish and Yoruba communities denounced the repression they and their families and communities have suffered under the communist dictatorship.

Moderated by Yaima Pardo, a Cuban journalist based in Miami, the webinar had the participation of Olainis Tejeda Beltrán, father of a Jewish family from Camagüey, whose children were subjected to violent harassment for wearing the kippah at school in 2020, and who is now in Germany; Carlos Valdés, a Miami-based Yoruba priest who has lived in exile without seeing his family in Cuba for 27 years; and Imam Abu Duyanah Tamayo, a writer and cultural rights advocate who leads the Cuban Association for the Dissemination of Islam. In December 2022, the regime arbitrarily prevented Duyanah from making his planned pilgrimage to Mecca. During the seminar, Duyanah shared that he is no longer under the travel ban.

In their presentations, the panelists said, among other things:

• Tejeda Beltrán: “The more we cried out for justice to Cuba’s state institutions, the more they threatened us, and even told us that they were going to put us in prison.”
• Tejeda Beltrán: “They told me that if they sent my son to the army, they would kill him like a bitch.”
• Tejeda Beltrán: “The communists tell you, ‘You can believe in whatever you want, but you have to kneel in front of the dictatorship. You are going to believe, but I am going to put the limits on your belief.'”
• Duyanah: “Muslims in Cuba do not have the right to have mosques and we do not have this right that Christians have, the so-called ‘house churches’.” Duyanah also said that the regime promised to build a mosque in Old Havana, but they never did.
• Duyanah: “There’s always that surveillance state on us.”
• Valdés: “The Yoruba Cultural Association of Cuba does not represent the practitioners of my religion. The Yoruba Cultural Association of Cuba represents the dictatorship. Those who run that organization are people who are specifically going to say what the dictatorship needs them to say.”
• Valdés: “The association should change its name to, ‘Revolutionary Association of Practitioners of African Religions.’”
• Valdés also said that many of the young people who came out to protest peacefully on 11J are practitioners of African religions and denounced the prison sentences given to many of them, including young people.

The three speakers stressed that the regime systematically establishes and uses putatively religious organizations, including the Yoruba Cultural Association of Cuba, the Patronato, a synagogue in Havana, and the Islamic League of Cuba, to control religious people and to pretend to the international community that Cubans enjoy religious freedom. They said that these organizations actually represent the dictatorship.

The Cuban regime’s repression of Olainis Tejeda Beltrán and his family and Abu Duyanah has been mentioned in numerous reports by the U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom (USCIRF) and the U.S. State Department. In December 2022, the State Department labeled Cuba a “country of particular concern” for its egregious violations of religious freedom.

Religiosos cubanos denuncian persecución a musulmanes, judíos y yorubas por la dictadura

 
MIAMI, FL – Outreach Aid to the Americas (OAA) (Alcance de Ayuda a las Américas), ayer celebró un seminario virtual donde representantes cubanos representando a las comunidades musulmana, judía y yoruba manifestaron denuncias sobre la despiadada persecución que sufren en sus religiones musulmana, yoruba y judía. Cada testimonio expresa la urgente necesidad de libertad religiosa en Cuba.

Moderado por Yaima Pardo, periodista cubana radicada en Miami, el seminario tuvo la participación de Olainis Tejeda Beltrán, padre de una familia judía camagüeyana, cuyos hijos fueron sometidos a hostigamiento violento por usar el kipá en la escuela en el 2020, y que ahora se encuentra en Alemania; Carlos Valdés, sacerdote yoruba radicado en Miami que ha vivido en el exilio sin ver a su familia en Cuba por 27 años; y el Imam Abu Duyanah Tamayo, escritor y defensor de los derechos culturales que lidera la Asociación Cubana para la Divulgación del Islam. En diciembre de 2022 el régimen impidió a Duyanah hacer la peregrinación a La Meca.

En sus intervenciones, los ponentes dijeron, entre otras cosas:

• Tejeda Beltrán: “Mientras más nosotros clamábamos por justicia a las instituciones estatales de Cuba, más nos amenazaban, y nos llegaron a decir que nos iban a meter presos”.
• Tejeda Beltrán: “Me dijeron que si le mandaban a mi hijo al ejército, lo mataban como a una perra”.
• Tejeda Beltrán: “Los comunistas te dicen, ‘Usted puede creer en lo que usted desee, pero hay que arrodillarse delante de la dictadura. Usted va a creer, pero yo le voy a poner los límites a su creencia’”.
• Duyanah: Duyanah: “Los musulmanes en Cuba no tenemos derecho a tener mezquitas y no tenemos este derecho que tienen los cristianos, las llamadas ‘casas culto’”. Duyanah también contó que el régimen prometió que iba a construir una mezquita en la Vieja Habana, pero nunca lo hicieron.
• Duyanah: “Siempre hay ese estado de vigilancia sobre nosotros”.
• Valdés: “La Asociación Cultural Yoruba de Cuba no representa a los practicantes de mi religión. La Asociación Cultural Yoruba de Cuba representa a la dictadura. Quienes dirigen esa organización son personas que específicamente van a decir lo que la dictadura necesita que ellos digan”.
• Valdés: “Para tu poder entrar en Cuba a participar en la más mínima ceremonia, tienes que estar inscrito en la Asociación Cultural Yoruba de Cuba. Si no perteneces a la Asociación Cultural Yoruba de Cuba, tú no puedes estar libremente dentro de Cuba practicando ningún tipo de las versiones de las religiones africanas”.

Los tres ponentes enfatizaron que el régimen sistemáticamente establece y usa organizaciones operativamente religiosas, entre ellas la Asociación Cultural Yoruba de Cuba, el Patronato, una sinagoga en La Habana, y la Liga Islámica de Cuba, para controlar a los religiosos y aparentar ante la comunidad internacional que los cubanos disfrutan de la libertad religiosa.

La represión del régimen cubano contra Olainis Tejeda Beltrán y su familia y Abu Duyanah ha sido mencionada en numerosos informes de la Comisión de Estados Unidos para la Libertad Religiosa Internacional (USCIRF, por sus siglas en inglés) y el Departamento de Estado de los Estados Unidos. En diciembre de 2022, el Departamento de Estado calificó a Cuba como un “país de especial preocupación” por sus violaciones graves a la libertad religiosa.
