OAA Welcomes Release of Nicaraguan Political Prisoners
MIAMI, FL – Outreach Aid to the Americas (OAA) today welcomed the reported release of more than 200 political prisoners who were unjustly jailed by the regime of Daniel Ortega in Nicaragua. OAA is pleased that the prisoners have been freed and are able to reunite with their families, but it is disappointed about the regime’s slanders against the prisoners, calling them “traitors to their homeland” and accusing them of acting to “undermine the nation’s sovereignty.” Further, OAA reiterates that it is a travesty that the more than 200 persons were jailed in the first place, held under inhumane conditions, and denied their religious freedom rights.
OAA President and CEO Dr. Teo Babun said: “This is very welcome news and we are happy for these prisoners whose only ‘crime’ was expressing their intent to participate in elections and speaking up for justice and human rights. But we must highlight the grave injustice that was done to them and to Christian leaders like Félix Maradiaga in jailing them for hundreds of days in the first place, cruelly depriving them of their ability to read a Bible and stealing from them time with their spouses and children that they will never get back.”
“Further, we and others in the international community cannot let this welcome development distract us from continuing to speak out about the continued abysmal human rights situation in Nicaragua,” continued Dr. Babun. “To take just one example, only days ago several Catholic priests and lay leaders received unjust prison sentences for trumped up charges – the latest in the Ortega regime’s war on the Catholic Church in Nicaragua. The fact is that religious freedom and other fundamental rights continue to be flagrantly violated under Daniel Ortega’s rule.”

La OAA celebra la liberación de los presos políticos nicaragüenses
MIAMI, FL – Outreach Aid to the Americas (OAA), o Alcance de Ayuda a las Américas en español, hoy celebró la liberación de más de 200 presos políticos encarcelados injustamente por el régimen de Daniel Ortega en Nicaragua. La OAA se alegra de que los presos hayan sido liberados y puedan reunirse con sus familias, pero está decepcionada por las calumnias del régimen contra los presos, llamándolos “traidores a la patria” y acusándolos de actuar para “socavar la soberanía de la nación.” Además, OAA reitera que es una parodia que las más de 200 personas fueran encarceladas en primer lugar, recluidas en condiciones inhumanas y privadas de sus derechos de libertad religiosa.
El Presidente de OAA, Dr. Teo Babun, declaró: “Es una noticia muy grata y nos alegramos por estos presos cuyo único ‘delito’ fue expresar su intención de participar en las elecciones y alzar la voz en favor de la justicia y los derechos humanos. Pero debemos destacar la grave injusticia que se cometió con ellos y con líderes cristianos como Félix Maradiaga al encarcelarlos durante cientos de días en primer lugar, privándoles cruelmente de su acceso a la Biblia y robándoles un tiempo con sus cónyuges e hijos que nunca recuperarán”.
“Además, nosotros y otros miembros de la comunidad internacional no podemos permitir que este grato acontecimiento nos distraiga de seguir denunciando la persistente y abismal situación de los derechos humanos en Nicaragua”, continuó el Dr. Babun. “Por poner sólo un ejemplo, hace sólo unos días varios sacerdotes y líderes laicos católicos fueron condenados injustamente a penas de prisión por cargos falsos, la última de las guerras del régimen de Ortega contra la Iglesia católica en Nicaragua. El hecho es que la libertad religiosa y otros derechos fundamentales continúan siendo violados flagrantemente bajo Daniel Ortega”.
